이날 파키스탄 경찰 수백명은 선거관리국과 인근 대법원 건물을 둘러쌌습니다. 대법원은 곧 무샤라프 대통령의 3선 출마에 대한 법적 판정을 내릴 예정입니다.한편 파키스탄의 야당인 국민당의 마카둠 아민씨도 이날 중앙선거관리국에 출마신청서를 접수시켰습니다.
현재 파키스탄의 야당 정치인들은 무샤라프 대통령의 출마가 허용될 경우 의정활동 중단과 함께 전국적인 시위를 펼칠 것이라고 다짐하고 있습니다. 야당은 무샤라프 대통령이 지난 1999년 쿠데타로 권좌에 오른 이후 이미 2번의 임기를 마쳤다며, 이제 군 합참의장직에서 물러나야 한다며 대법원에 소송을 제기한 상태입니다. 무샤라프 대통령은 앞서 변호사를 통해, 재선에 성공하면 자신이 겸직하고 있는 군 합참의장직에서 물러날 것이라고 말한 바 있습니다.
파키스탄 대통령은 국민 직선제가 아니라 주의회와 연방의회 표결을 통해 선출하고 있습니다.

Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf filed election papers today (Thursday) cementing his controversial re-election bid for president, as security forces sealed off the capital Islamabad to prevent planned protests.
His nomination papers for the country's upcoming October sixth elections were delivered to the Election Commission Office by Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz.
Hundreds of riot police and commandos were deployed around the election office and nearby Supreme Court, which is expected to rule soon on legal challenges to General Musharraf's eligibility to run for office and his dual role as government leader and army chief.
Opposition leader Makhdoom Amin Faheem, the vice chairman of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party, also filed his nomination papers today.
Ms. Bhutto and General Musharraf have been holding talks on a power sharing deal, but have yet to reach an agreement.
