버마정부군병력이 군사 정권의 집회 금지령을 거부한 채 민주화 시위를 벌이고 있는 군중을 향해 총격을 가해 여러명이 다쳤다고 현지 목격자들이 말했습니다.
일부 목격자들은 사망자가 발생했다고 말하고 있으나 사살 여부는 아직 확인되지 않고 있습니다.
목격자들은 군인과 전투경찰이 버마인들의 불교 숭배 장소인 쉐다곤 파고다와 수레 파고다 불탑에 운집한 승려 등 민주화 운동가들을 해산하기 위해 최루탄을 발포하고 경찰봉을 휘둘렀다고 말했습니다. 버마 군사정부는 적어도 일부 승려를 포함해 적어도 100명의 민주화 운동가들을 구금했습니다.
목격자들은 1만여명의 시위 군중이 양곤에서 버마의 군인, 전경과 대치하며 45년간의 억압적인 군사통치에 항의하는 시위행진을 벌였다고 말했습니다.
이번 민주화 시위는 지난달 군사정부의 대폭적인 연료값 인상에 따른 소규모 시위에서 시작됐습니다. 그러나 지난 일주일간 수 만명의 시민들이 양곤과 만다라이의 거리로 뛰쳐 나와 시위에 합류하며 시위자 수가 지난 1988년 민주화 운동 이래 최대 규모로 불어났습니다.
Witnesses in Burma say soldiers in Rangoon have fired into crowds of pro-democracy
protesters who defied a government ban on demonstrations.
Witnesses say several people were wounded.
They say soldiers and riot police also used tear gas and batons to break up a gathering of Buddhist monks and activists today (Wednesday) at the revered Shwedagon and Sule pagodas. At least 100 activists, including some monks, were detained.
Witnesses say an estimated 10-thousand people defied the security forces, and marched through Rangoon to protest 45 years of oppressive military rule.
Their movement began last month as a small protest against an increase in gas prices. But over the past week, tens of thousands of people have poured into the streets of Rangoon and Mandalay in the largest pro-democracy movement the country has seen since 1988.
