Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert says Israel does not want war with Syria, and that he believes tensions between the two countries will subside.
News reports say Mr. Olmert made the statement today (Monday) in a closed door meeting with the Israeli parliament's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee.
Syria earlier this month accused Israeli aircraft of violating its airspace and dropping munitions. There are unconfirmed reports that the Israeli planes carried out a secret strike on a Syrian nuclear facility.
In a related development, Israeli spokesman Mark Regev says Israel would not object to Syrian participation in a U.S.-sponsored Middle East peace conference expected in November.
Regev says Israel is interested in as many Arab states attending the meeting as possible.
