반 총장은 이 날 뉴욕에서 열린 이라크 관련 토론회를 마치면서 바그다드와 이르빌에서 근무하는 직원 수를 늘리는 것을 고려하고 있다고 말했습니다. 반 총장은 또 유엔은 바스라시에도 주재 사무소를 세우는 것을 고려하고 있다고 밝혔습니다. 반 총장은 그러나 시한은 언급하지 않았습니다.
한편, 이 날 토론회에는 이라크 이웃국인 이란, 쿠웨이트, 시리아를 포함해 20개국 대표가 참석했습니다.
토론회는 이번 주 열리는 유엔 총회에 앞서 열린 것으로, 누리알 말리키 이라크 총리는 이라크 주재 유엔 직원 수 확대를 위해 추가 병력을 지원할 준비가 됐다고 밝혔습니다.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says he expects to increase the number of U.N. personnel in Iraq as soon as facilities are ready.
Mr. Ban made the announcement Saturday in New York at the close of a major conference on Iraq. He said he is considering staff increases for the cities of Baghdad and Irbil. Mr. Ban also said the U.N. is considering establishing a presence in Basra. He did not offer a timetable for his plans.
Representatives of 20 nations participated in the conference, including many of Iraq's neighbors such as Iran, Kuwait and Syria. At the conference, held ahead of the convening of the U.N. General Assembly this week, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said Iraq is ready to provide the extra security necessary for an expanded U.N. presence.
