A top U.S. official has called for new U.N. Security Council sanctions against Iran for its controversial nuclear program.
Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns told reporters today (Wednesday) during a visit to Turkey that the United States is committed to a peaceful resolution of the dispute with Iran.
He said the United States has the strong backing of France and Britain for a third round of sanctions on Iran, but is seeking support from Russia and China.
But Russia's ambassador to the United Nations, Vitaly Churkin, said in New York that the U.N. Security Council can adopt one resolution after another, but the question is whether progress is being made.
Earlier, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice criticized the International Atomic Energy Agency for a recent deal with Iran over long-standing questions about Tehran's nuclear activities. Speaking to reporters traveling with her to the Middle East, Rice said the IAEA is "not in the business of diplomacy."
