The top U.S. military commander in Iraq has begun preparing a summary of the situation in the war-torn country to be delivered Monday to U.S. lawmakers.
General David Petraeus is expected to describe trends in Iraq since the U.S. began its so-called surge of additional troops earlier this year.
U.S. Ambassador Ryan Crocker will also testify about the political situation in Iraq.
Mr. Bush said Saturday he hoped U.S. legislators would listen to General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker before forming any conclusions. On his trip home from the APEC summit in Australia, Mr. Bush stopped in Hawaii to meet with servicemembers wounded in Iraq.
The president said he told the wounded soldiers he had been encouraged by signs of progress he saw during his recent trip to Iraq. Mr. Bush said he would make a speech to the nation about Iraq later in the week.
Lawmakers from both sides of the political spectrum are anticipating Monday's testimony to congress.
Republican supporters of the administration say there are signs of progress in Iraq that warrant a continuation of the U.S. presence there. Some Democratic Party lawmakers have been pushing for a timetable for the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq.
