러시아와 일본이 정상회담을 갖고, 수십년간 계속돼온 쿠릴 열도 문제의 해결을 위해 함께 노력하기로 했습니다.
호주에서 열리고 있는 아시아태평양경제협력체, APEC 정상회담에 참가 중인 아베 신조 일본 총리와 블라디미르 푸틴 러시아 대통령은 8일 별도의 회담을 개최했습니다. 두 정상은 쿠릴 열도 문제의 해결을 위한 새로운 협상 노력을 기울이기로 했습니다.
일본은 쿠릴 열도에 있는 4 개의 작은 섬이 자신의 영토라고 주장하고 있습니다. 하지만 구 소련은 제2차세계대전 종전을 며칠 앞두고 이 섬들을 자국 영토로 편입했습니다.
이후 전쟁은 끝났지만 60여년간 양국간의 영토 분쟁은 계속되고 있습니다. 또 이런 분쟁은 양국 경제협력에도 걸림돌이 되고 있습니다.
한편 세르게이 라브로프 러시아 외무장관은 다음달 일본을 방문해서 추가 협상을 벌일 예정입니다.

The leaders of Russia and Japan have agreed to work toward finally resolving a decades-old dispute over the Kuril Islands.
Meeting on the sidelines of the APEC summit in Australia, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Russian President Vladimir Putin today (Saturday) pledged to renew efforts to negotiate a final deal on the archipelago. Japan calls the four small islands the Northern Territories.
The Soviet Union annexed the island chain in the final days of World War Two.
The more than 60-year territorial disagreement has kept Moscow and Tokyo from concluding a post-World War Two peace treaty. It also has been an obstacle to economic cooperation between the two countries.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is scheduled to travel to Japan in October to continue the negotiations.
