후 진타오 중국 국가주석이 최근 대만 문제와 관련해서 미국의 도움을 촉구했습니다. 후 주석은 그러면서 대만이 유엔가입에 대한 국민투표를 실시하는 것은 위험한 일이라고 경고했습니다.
후 주석은 6일 조지 부시 미국 대통령과 만난 자리에서 앞으로 2년은 중국과 대만 간에 매우 위험한 시기가 될 것이라고 말했습니다. 그러면서 중국과 미국이 함께 대만에 강력한 경고를 보내야 한다고 말했습니다.
대만 지도부는 내년에 열리는 총통 선거와 함께, 독립적인 자격으로 유엔에 가입하는 데 대한 국민투표를 실시한다는 계획입니다. 중국 정부는 이를 매우 강하게 반대하고 있습니다.
이에 대해 부시 대통령은 미국은 중국과 대만간의 양안관계에 어떠한 변화도 원치 않으며, 대만의 국민투표 추진에 대해 우려하고 있다는 입장을 후 주석에게 전했습니다.
한편 천수이볜 대만 총통은 6일 대만이 국가인지 아닌지는 외부에서 간섭할 일이 아니라고 말했습니다.

China's President Hu Jintao has asked the United States to help it keep its rival Taiwan in check, saying the island's upcoming plan to hold a referendum on joining the United Nations is dangerous.
During his meeting with U.S. President George Bush today (Thursday), (a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman says) Mr. Hu warned that the next two years would be a "highly dangerous period" for relations between Taiwan and China. He said China and the United States both need to give Taiwan stronger warnings.
Beijing is upset with Taiwan's government because it plans to ask voters next year, during its presidential elections, whether they support the island's membership in the world body.
Mr. Bush told Mr. Hu that the United States does not want to see any change in the status quo, and he cited concern about Taiwan's planned referendum.
But Taiwan's President Chen Shui-bian responded today by saying the people of Taiwan "do not need anyone to tell us" whether Taiwan is a country.
