대만 동쪽 해양에서 진도6.5의 강력한 지진이 발생했습니다. 이로인해 수도인 타이페이에서는 건물이 흔들리고, 잠을 자던 주민들이 깨서 대피하는 소동이 벌어졌습니다.
과학자들은 이번 지진의 규모가 진도 6.5에 이를 것이라고 분석했습니다.
피해자나 피해 규모는 아직까지 집계되지 않고 있습니다.
미국 지질관측소는 대만의 동쪽 해안에서 80킬로미터 떨어진 곳에서 지진이 발생했다고 밝혔습니다. 또 대만 중앙기상청은 해저면에서 27킬로미터 떨어진 곳이 진원이라고 말했습니다.
지진은 현지 시각으로 7일 새벽 오전에 발생했습니다.
대만에서는 지진이 자주 발생하지만 큰 규모는 드뭅니다. 하지만 지난 1999년 9월 타이완 중부에서는 진도 7.6의 강진으로 2천3백명이 숨진 바 있습니다.

A strong undersea earthquake has struck off the eastern coast of Taiwan, shaking buildings in the island's capital, Taipei, and waking residents from their sleep.
Scientists measured the quake at a magnitude of six-point-five.
There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
The U.S. Geological Survey says the epicenter of the quake was 80 kilometers off Taiwan's eastern coast. Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau said the quake struck at an undersea depth of 27 kilometers.
The quake hit early Friday morning local time.
Earthquakes frequently rattle Taiwan, but most are minor and cause little or no damage. However, a seven-point-six-magnitude earthquake in central Taiwan in September 1999 killed more than 23-hundred people.
