The U.S. military in Afghanistan says at least 18 Taleban insurgents have been killed in battles with Afghan and coalition forces in southern Kandahar province.
The military said the fighting erupted late Tuesday, when insurgents tried to ambush joint Afghan and coalition troop patrols in two separate areas of Kandahar. It said soldiers engaged the insurgents and air strikes were carried out against enemy positions.
The military said coalition and Afghan forces also fought a fierce battle with Taleban insurgents in the neighboring Ghazni province early today (Wednesday), killing several militants.
On Tuesday, Afghan officials in Ghazni claimed government troops killed a Taleban commander (Mullah Mateen) who, they said, played a key role in July's kidnappings of 23 South Korean church workers.
Taleban representatives have not confirmed the reported death of the commander.
