유엔 마약범죄국의 안토니오 코스타 국장은 5일, 아프간 정부가 현재 마약 양귀비 재배를 근절하기 위해 제초제를 공중 살포하라는 점증하는 압력을 받고 있다고 말했습니다. 코스타 국장은 아프간의 나토군이 양귀비 재배를 줄이기 위한 노력을 지원할 것을 촉구했습니다.
하미드 카르자이 아프가니스탄 대통령은 지금까지 많은 농민들이 양귀비 재배에 생계를 의존하고 있다는 점을 들어 양귀비를 제거할 수 있는 제초제의 공중살포에 반대해 왔습니다.
지난 주에 발표된 한 유엔 보고서는 아프가니스탄의 양귀비 생산이 기록적인 수준으로 늘어났다고 지적한 바 있습니다. 아프가니스탄은 세계 양귀비 생산의 90% 이상을 차지하고 있습니다.

The United Nations drug agency has called for tougher measures against Afghanistan's growing opium trade.
Antonio Maria Costa, the executive director of the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime, said today (Tuesday) the Afghan government is under growing pressure to use aerial spraying to eradicate opium poppy plants, as other methods have proved in effective. Costa urged the NATO mission in Afghanistan to support efforts to reduce opium production.
The U.N. published a report last week saying Afghanistan's opium production has increased to record levels, with the country now accounting for more than 90 percent of the world's opium production.
Costa said Afghanistan's illegal drug trade is believed to be the main source of revenue for Taleban insurgents.
So far, President Hamid Karzai has resisted pressure to use aerial spraying to destroy opium poppy fields, saying that many farmers depend on the crops for survival.
