아프간 정부는 아프간 경찰이 지난 7월 23명의 한국인 기독교 자원봉사자들을 납치하는 데 주요 역할을 한 것으로 알려진 탈레반 무장분자 물라 마틴을 사살했다고 밝혔습니다.
관리들은 한국인들이 납치됐던 가즈니 주에서 3일 아프간 경찰과 탈레반 무장단체들과 벌어진 교전이 벌어져 물라 마틴을 포함한 16명의 무장단원들이 사망했다고 말했습니다.
탈레반은 한국인 인질 가운데 남자 2명을 살해하고 여자 2명을 우선 석방 한 뒤 지난주 나머지 19명을 석방했습니다.
한국 정부 관리들은 이들의 석방을 대가로 몸값을 지불했다는 보도를 부인했습니다.
한국은 탈레반과의 협상에서 인질 석방의 조건으로 200명의 한국군을 철수하고 기독교 선교활동을 중단하기로 약속했습니다.
The Afghan government says police have killed a Taleban militant who allegedly played a key role in the July kidnappings of 23 South Korean church workers.
Officials say Mullah Mateen was among 16 militants killed in fighting late Monday in the central Afghan province of Ghazni, where the aid workers were abducted.
The hostage ordeal ended last week when the kidnappers freed the remaining 19 hostages in separate groups. Two female hostages had already been released and two males were executed in July during talks with the Afghan government.
South Korean officials have denied reports that they paid a ransom to the Taleban for the Christian missionaries.
To secure the release of the hostages, South Korea agreed to withdraw 200 of its non-combat troops from Afghanistan by year's end -- which it had already planned to do -- and to suspend missionary work in the country.
The deal has been criticized by some Afghan officials who say it will only encourage more abductions.
