그리스 당국은 지난 주에 남부 그리스를 휩쓸며 64명의 사망자와 많은 재산 피해를 낸 대규모 산불이 진정됐다고 밝혔습니다.
유럽연합의 다누타 후브너 지역정책 집행위원은 31일, 그리스 산불 피해현황을 평가하기 위해 항공기편으로 피해지역을 둘러보았습니다. 다누타 집행위원은 올해에 그리스에 대한 원조로 약 8억달러를 제공할 수 있을 것이라고 말했습니다.
미국은 그리스에 130만불의 원조와 기술지원을 제공하기로 약속했습니다.
유럽위원회의 호세 마누엘 바로소 집행위원장은 그리스의 산불을 ‘유럽의 재앙’이라고 말했습니다. 그는 그리스 관계자들과 회담하기 위해 이날 그리스에 도착할 예정입니다.
그리스 정부는 산불 피해 보상을 요구하는 주민들에게 희생자 1인당 4천달러씩 보상금을 곧 지급하겠다고 제의했습니다.

Greek authorities say wildfires that have swept through southern Greece over the past week claiming 64 lives and destroying property have been brought under control.
The European Commissioner for Regional Policy, Danuta Hubner, today (Friday) flew over the scene to assess Greek needs. She said the European Union could offer up to about 800-million dollars in assistance to Greece this year.
The United States has pledged one-million 300-thousand dollars in aid and technical assistance to the Greeks.
European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso has called the fires a "European disaster." He was expected to arrive in Greece today for talks with government officials.
The Greek government has offered immediate payments of four thousand dollars each to victims claiming compensation from the fires.
