미 의회 소속 회계감사원은 이라크 사태를 이렇다 할만한 진전이 없는 것으로 평가했다고 미국 언론들이 30일 보도했습니다.
이에 앞서 미 의회는 미군 증강을 하겠다는 조지 부시 대통령의 요청에 대해 정치, 경제 등 18개 분야에 대한 목표를 제시했습니다. 그러나 회계감사원은 최근 보고서를 통해 18개 목표 가운데 단지 3개 목표만 달성했다고 밝혔습니다.
회계 감사원은 이 보고서에서 정치, 경제, 언론 위원회 설치 분야만 만족할 만하고 나머지 분야는 대체로 실망스럽다고 지적했습니다.
이어 보고서는 폭력사태는 여전히 빈번하며 이라크 국회가 핵심적인 법안을 통과시키지 않고 있다고 말했습니다. 회계 감사원은 곧 이 보고서를 미 의회에 제출할 예정입니다.
한편 백악관은 이 보고서에 유보적인 반응을 보였습니다. 백악관 대변인은 이라크 사태를 제대로 평가하려면 이라크 주둔 미군 사령관과 이라크 주재 대사가 내달에 제출할 보고서를 지켜봐야 할 것이라고 말했습니다.

U.S. government auditors are reported to have determined that Iraq has failed to meet most of the 18 benchmarks mandated by Congress to judge military and political progress in the war-torn country.
U.S. media say a report to be issued by the Government Accountability Office will say the Iraqi government has failed to meet at least 13 of the 18 goals set by U.S. lawmakers to assess President Bush's plan to send an additional 30-thousand troops into Iraq earlier this year.
The GAO report is expected to be delivered to Congress in the coming days.
A White House spokeswoman (Dana Perino) today (Thursday) urged people to wait for next month's report on Iraq that will be delivered by Ambassador Ryan Crocker and Army General David Petreaus.
