지난 4월 버지니아 공대에서 발생한 총기 참사는 대학측의 늑장 대응이 참사를 더 크게 만들었다는 내용의 보고서가 발표됐습니다.
티모시 케인 버지니아주 주지사의 요청으로 구성된 버지니아 공대 참사 조사위원회가 30일 발표한 사건의 진상 조사 보고서에 따르면 경찰은 지난 4월 16일 아침 한 기숙사에서 학생 2명이 총으로 살해된 지 2시간이나 지나서야 학교 전체에 경보를 발했습니다.
이때는 범인 조승희가 스스로 목숨을 끊기전 이미 30명을 더 사살하기 위해 학교 구내 다른 건물로 향하던 중이었습니다.
조사위원회는 학교 전체를 폐쇄했더라도 살인을 막을 수는 없었겠지만, 학생들과 교수진이 스스로를 더 잘 방어할 수는 있었을 것이라고 말했습니다.

A report on the deadly shooting rampage at Virginia Tech University in April says school officials waited too long to inform students and faculty about the first two murders on campus that day.
The report, issued by an independent panel that investigated the incident, says two hours went by before police sent out a a campus-wide alert that two people were shot to death at a dormitory on the morning of April 16th.
By then, the gunman, Seung-Hui Cho, was headed to a campus building where he killed 30 more people before committing suicide.
The panel says a campus-wide lockdown would not have been prevented the killings, but could have allowed students and faculty to better protect themselves.
The eight-member panel, appointed by Virginia Governor Tim Kaine, spent four months investigating the shooting rampage.
