국제 언론자유 감시단체인 ‘국경없는 기자들’은 중국 법원의 이같은 판결을 비난하면서, 현재 중국에서 억류돼 있는 첸 씨와 다른 사이버 반체제 인사들과 인터넷 이용자들을 석방할 것을 호소했습니다.
치 충화이 기자와 사진기자 마 수레핑 씨도 지난 6월, 등조 시 공산당의 부패와 관련한 기사를 보도했다는 이유로 체포된 것으로 알려졌습니다. 국경 없는 기자들은 현재 중국에는 적어도 32명의 기자들이 투옥돼 있다고 밝히고 있습니다. 이 중에는 사기 혐의로 3년 징역형을 선고받고 복역 중인 ‘뉴욕타임스’신문의 자오 옌 조사원도 포함돼 있습니다.
미국은 인터넷을 통해 자신들의 의사를 표현한 중국의 언론인들과 인권운동가들에 대한 체포와 구속이 늘고 있는데 대해 우려하고 있습니다.

Chinese authorities are tightening their control of the media and continuing to put those who resist censorship behind bars.
Most recently, Chen Shuqing [Chen Shoo-ching], a Chinese rights activist, was reportedly sentenced to four years in jail after being charged with subversion for posting politically sensitive essays on the Internet. His lawyer, Li Jianqiang [Lee Chee-ehn-chee-ahng], called the sentence "totally unreasonable," saying Mr. Chen "was only expressing his opinion and that is within his rights under the constitution." Mr. Li has also come under fire by Chinese authorities for defending rights activists. He was notified in June that his license to practice law had been suspended for at least one year.
The free press monitoring group Reporters Without Borders condemned the sentence and reiterated its appeal "for the release of Chen and the other fifty cyber-dissidents and Internet users held in China."
Journalist Qi Chonghuai [Chee Chung-why] and freelance photographer Ma Shiping [Mah Sure-ping] were also reportedly arrested in June for exposing corruption in the Tengzhou [Duh-ng -joe] city Communist party. Reporters Without Borders has stated that at least thirty-two journalists are in prison in China. They include New York Times researcher Zhao Yan [Jow Yen], who is serving a three-year sentence for alleged fraud.
The United States is concerned about the recent increase in arrests and detentions of Chinese journalists and rights activists who express their views on the internet. U.S. government officials regularly raise human rights issues with the Chinese government. The State Department's annual China human rights reports have noted China's well-documented abuses of human rights in violation of internationally recognized norms, stemming both from the authorities' intolerance of dissent and the inadequacy of legal safeguards for basic freedoms. As U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte said, the Chinese government "needs to respect its citizens' right to speak, assemble, and publish. . . .free of coercion."
