세계식량계획은 21일 성명을 통해, 북한 정부는 세계 식량계획이 앞으로 3달 동안 21만 5천 명의 북한 주민들에게 식량을 배급할 수 있도록 허용할 것이라고 말했습니다.
그동안 세계식량계획은 외부의 원조가 없을 경우 주민들에게 충분한 식량을 제공할 수 없는 북한에서 기아를 근절하기 위한 국제사회 노력의 중심 역할을 했습니다.
북한은 이달 초 내린 폭우로 3백명이 사망하거나 실종됐다고 보고했습니다. 또한 북한 남부지방의 홍수로 30만명의 이재민이 발생했고, 농경지의 11%가 침수되거나 매몰, 유실됐습니다.
여러 나라들과 민간 인도적 기구들이 대북한 지원을 약속했습니다.

A U.N. aid agency says it will begin emergency aid to North Korea to help the country recover from some of the worst flooding in years.
The World Food Program issued a statement today (Tuesday) saying the government in Pyongyang will allow it to distribute food to 215-thousand people over the next three months.
International assistance in North Korea is strictly monitored. The World Food Program is already at the center of international efforts to help fight hunger in North Korea, which is unable to provide for its own people without outside aid.
The country has reported 300 people are dead or missing after torrential rains earlier this month. Flooding in southern North Korea made 300-thousand people homeless and destroyed 11 percent of the grain harvest.
Several nations and private humanitarian organizations have pledged support.
