미군 당국은 18이, 이라크 중부와 북부지역에서 전개된 소탕작전으로 테러리스트 용의자 열 여섯 명을 검거했다고 밝혔습니다. 이와 별도로 이라크 북부 유전지대 키르쿠크시에서 폭탄공격이 벌어져 네 명이 살해되고 서른 네 명이 부상했다고 이라크 경찰이 밝혔습니다.
한편, 이라크 미군 고위 사령관, 레이 오디에르노 중장은 미군과 이라크군이 이라크내 저항분자 목표에 대한 일련의 신속 소탕작전에 주력할 것이라고 말했습니다. 오디에르노 중장은 그러면서 이라크 미군병력 감축이 안보상황에 따라 내년 4월에 시작될른지도 모른다고 말했습니다.
The U.S. military in Iraq says coalition forces have killed two terrorists during an operation targeting al-Qaida in Iraq leaders and the group's bombing network.
It says 16 suspected terrorists were also detained during today's (Saturday's) raids in central and northern Iraq.
Separately, in the northern oil city of Kirkuk, Iraqi police say bomb blasts killed four people and wounded 34 others.
In other developments, a top U.S. commander in Iraq says the U.S. and Iraqi military are focusing on a series of quick strikes against insurgent targets in Iraq. Lieutenant General Ray Odierno also said there may be a drawdown of U.S. troops in Iraq starting next April, depending on the security situation.
He said the situation has improved, but acknowledged much more needs to be done to solidify the gains.
