이란 경찰은 수도 테헤란 인근 카라주에서 파티를 벌이던 젊은이 20명을 체포했습니다. 이란 카라주 경찰은 체포 일주일 전에는 록 음악 공연장을 급습해 2백명이 넘는 이란 젊은이들을 구금한 바 있습니다.
보도에 따르면 남녀 젊은이들은 공연장에서 서로 섞여 함께 춤을 췄고, 이는 이란에서 금지된 활동입니다. 또 몇몇 여성들은 머리 두건 등 이란 정부가 요구하는 복장을 착용하지 않은 것으로 알려졌습니다.
이란 당국은 최근 몇달 간 이른바 '부적절한 의상과 행동'을 이유로 이란인들을 박해했습니다. 이란 경찰 관리인 호세인 졸파아리에 따르면, 52만7천명이 넘게 경고를 받았으며 2만명 이상 체포됐다가 조건부로 풀려났습니다. 또 이슬람 복장 양식을 따르지 않은 혐의로 남녀를 불문하고 모두 2265건의 재판이 이란 법원에서 진행 중입니다.
이란의 여권 운동가인, 자이나브 페이감바주데 씨는 부적절하게 옷을 입었다는 이유로 투옥된 16세 가량의 소녀 2명을 테헤란의 에빈 감옥에서 만났다고 전했습니다. 페이감바주데 씨는 소녀들은 매우 심하게 폭행을 당해, 온 몸에 멍이 들어 있었다고 말했습니다.
미국 워싱턴에 있는 '이란 인권과 민주주의 증진을 위한 보로만드 재단'의 로야 보로만드 소장은 이란의 젊은이들은 이랍의 소수 단체와 노동 조직 등 다른 단체들과 마찬가지로 자유로운 연대 활동의 권리를 위해 투쟁하고 있다고 밝혔습니다.
보로만드 소장은 이란에는 소수 단체 소속원과 노동운동가, 여권 운동가, 학생활동가까지 하나로 연결하는 것이 있다면서 그들은 모두 정부의 영향 바깥에서 독립적으로 서로 어울릴 수 있는 생활을 누리기 위해 애쓰고 있다고 말했습니다.
숀 맥코맥 미국 국무부 대변인은 성명에서 미국은 보편적 권리와 정의를 위해 투쟁하는 이란의 모든 학생과 시민 사회 지도자들을 지지한다고 밝혔습니다.

Iranian police arrested twenty young people at a private party in Karaj [kah-rah-juh], near Tehran. The arrests came just a week after police in Karaj raided a rock concert and detained over two-hundred young Iranians. Boys and girls reportedly mingled and danced together, activities forbidden in Iran. Some of the girls, it was said, were not wearing the headscarves and attire required by the Iranian regime.
For months, Iranian authorities have been persecuting people for what they call improper dress and behavior. An Iranian police official, Hossein Zolfaghari [hoh-SAYN zohl-fah-ah-ree], said more than five-hundred-twenty-seven-thousand people have been warned, over twenty-thousand have been arrested and then released conditionally, and a total of two-thousand-two-hundred-sixty-five cases - including men and women - have been presented to [the] judiciary for trial on the charge of noncompliance with the Islamic dress code.
I saw two girls of around sixteen [years of age] in Evin [prison in Tehran] who were arrested for dressing improperly, said Zeinab Peighambarzadeh [ZAY-nahb pay-GHAM-bahr-zuh-deh], an Iranian women's rights activist. They had been beaten badly and their bodies were all bruised, she said.
Roya Boroumand [ROY-ah BOUR-oo-mahnd] is the executive director of the Washington-based Boroumand Foundation for the Promotion of Human Rights and Democracy in Iran. She says Iran's young people are struggling for the same right of free association that is denied to minority groups, labor organizers, and other groups in Iran:
"There is something that links the minorities to the unionists to women activists to student activists - all these people are trying to have some sort of associative life outside of the government and independent of the government."
U.S. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said in a written statement that the United States stands with all students and civil society leaders in Iran, who courageously struggle for their universal rights and justice in their country.
