A strong earthquake, measured by scientists at a magnitude of 7.4, has struck off Indonesia's West Java island near the capital Jakarta.
The U.S. Geological Survey says the epicenter of the quake was 112 kilometers northeast of the capital. It struck at a depth of 282 kilometers, and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was little risk of a large wave generated by the quake. The temblor could be felt by residents in Jakarta where buildings swayed.
There were no immediate reports about injuries or significant damage.
In December 2004, a massive undersea earthquake and tsunami killed more than 160-thousand people in Indonesia's westernmost Aceh province. Many thousands more were killed in other Indian Ocean nations.
Indonesia is the world's largest archipelago. It is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc of volcanos and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.
