국제언론감시단체인 ‘국경없는 기자들’은 6일, 중국 당국이 2008년 베이징 올림픽을 앞두고 언론인 탄압을 계속하고 있는데 대해 베이징에서 이에 반대하는 이례적인 항의시위를 벌였습니다.
‘국경없는 기자들’의 회원들은 이날 중국 올림픽조직위원회 본부 바깥에서 티셔츠를 입고 수갑으로 올림픽 원을 그린 사인을 들고 시위를 벌였습니다.
잠시 후 약 20여명의 중국 경찰들이 현장에 나타나 인권운동가들과 시위를 취재하던 다른 외국인 기자들과 몸싸움을 벌였습니다. 경찰은 시위자들을 주차장에 구금했다가 약 한 시간 후에 아무 설명없이 풀어주었습니다.
‘국경없는 기자들’의 로버트 메나드 회원은 중국이 올림픽 개최를 앞두고 언론 자유를 개선하겠다던 약속을 이행하지 않고 있다고 말했습니다.

An international media rights group held a rare protest in Beijing today (Monday) against China's continued harassment of journalists one year before it hosts the Olympics.
Several members of Reporters Without Borders wore T-shirts and held signs depicting the Olympic rings as handcuffs outside the headquarters of the Games' organizers.
Shortly afterwards, about 20 Chinese policemen scuffled with the activists and other foreign journalists covering the protest. The police detained the group in a parking lot and released them about an hour later without explanation.
A member of the media rights group (Robert Menard) says China has not fulfilled promises it made to improve media freedoms ahead of the Games.
The games' organizing committee said today (Monday) it welcomes constructive criticism from foreign journalists. But, it also rejected any attempts by foreign groups to politicize the Olympics.
