.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson has voiced opposition to legislation in Congress that would enable Washington to punish China for maintaining a weak currency.
Paulson tells China's state-run Xinhua news agency that holding talks is a much more productive way of dealing with the currency issue. Paulson is in China for talks with President Hu Jintao and other top officials, and is trying to defuse political tensions between the two countries.
He is pushing Beijing to strengthen its currency, which could help reduce China's trade surplus with the United States.
The U.S. Senate Finance Committee has approved legislation that would allow Washington to sanction other nations that refuse to adopt more market-based currency policies.
China has allowed its currency to appreciate by about nine percent since 2005. But some U.S. legislators and manufacturers say the yuan is undervalued by as much as 40 percent, giving Chinese products an unfair price advantage.
