British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and U.S. President George Bush reaffirmed the strong relationship between their two nations, each saying the ties are built on shared values.

The leaders spoke jointly to reporters today (Monday) after talks at the presidential retreat outside the U.S. capital (in rural Maryland). They said they discussed the war in Iraq, global trade, terrorism, and the conflict in Sudan's Darfur region.

Mr. Brown said the two men held "full and frank discussions" both today (Monday) and Sunday.

The British leader told reporters that his country has responsibilities to keep in Iraq. He spoke about the importance of turning security control over to the Iraqis. He noted that Britain has already transferred control of three out of four provinces to Iraqi authorities.

Mr. Bush said the war in Iraq is going to continue for a long time. He said he believes Mr. Brown understands that failure in Iraq would be disastrous for national security in both the U.S and Britain.

Speaking about the conflict in Sudan, Mr. Brown said he agrees with Mr. Bush about the importance of increasing pressure to end the violence in the Darfur region.
