블라디미르 푸틴 러시아 대통령은 지난 6월, 미국과 러시아의 합동 미사일 기지를 아제르바이잔에 건설하자고 제의했으며, 부시 미국 대통령은 이 제의를 검토해 보기로 동의했습니다.
러시아는 폴란드와 체코공화국에 건설하려는 미국의 미사일 방어계획이 러시아를 위협하게 될 것이라고 경고했습니다. 미국은 이같은 유럽 미사일 방어계획이 이란과 북한과 같은 불량국가로부터의 미사일 공격을 저지하기 위한 것이라고 밝혔습니다.

U.S. and Russian missile experts are meeting in Washington to discuss Moscow's proposal to build a joint missile defense base instead of a planned U.S. shield in central Europe.
U.S. sources close to the talks say they began today (Monday) and will end Tuesday.
Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed last month setting up a U.S.-Russian missile shield in Azerbaijan, and President Bush agreed to study the suggestion.
Moscow says the planned U.S. anti-missile bases in Poland and the Czech Republic would threaten Russian security. Washington says the bases would be aimed at stopping attacks from rogue states such as Iran and North Korea.
