The U.S. director of national intelligence says the United States will continue interrogating terror suspects, but will not engage in torture.
Mike McConnell said on U.S. television today (Sunday) that the interrogation techniques used by the United States are not torture, although he would not comment on specific techniques. He did say the implied threat of torture is an effective psychological approach for getting information.
Also today, President Bush's homeland security adviser, Frances Townsend, said the United States does not use torture, sexual humiliation, or degradation of a person's religion to get information.
President Bush issued an executive order Friday that bans the use of torture against al-Qaida or Taleban members held by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency. The order gives what the U.S. calls "enemy combatants" the same protections that prisoners of war get from the international Geneva Conventions.
