지난 3월 페르베즈 무샤라프 대통령에 의해 직무정지 됐던 파키스탄 대법원장이 넉달만에 다시 자리에 복귀했습니다.
파키스탄의 이프티카르 모하메드 초드리 대법원장은 대법원이 무샤라프 대통령의 명령이 불법이라는 판결을 내린지 하룻만인 오늘(21일) 업무에 복귀했습니다. 파키스탄 대통령실은 이에 대해 성명을 내고 대통령은 법원의 결정을 존중할 것이라고 밝혔습니다.
파키스탄 대법원은 앞서 판결에서 찬성10대 반대 3으로 초드리 대법원장의 직권남용 혐의를 기각했습니다.
미국 국무부는 이번 판결에 환영을 표시하고 이는 파키스탄 정치제도가 성숙되고 있음을 보여주는 것이라고 말했습니다.
Pakistan's chief justice has returned to work after being reinstated by the Supreme Court, four months after he was suspended by President Pervez Musharraf.
Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry began his first day back at work today (Saturday) after the Supreme Court Friday reversed General Musharraf's March ninth suspension order, ruling that it was illegal. The president's office issued a statement saying General Musharraf would respect the court's decision.
The court also dismissed allegations of misconduct and abuse of power against Chaudhry by a 10-to-three vote.
The United States has welcomed the reinstatement of the chief justice. A State Department spokesman (Tom Casey) said that although the outcome of the case is seen as a blow to General Musharraf, it shows the strength of Pakistan's political institutions.
