국제인권단체인 '휴먼 라이츠 와치'는 베트남 당국이 평화 시위를 하는 시민의 권리를 존중해야 한다고 촉구했습니다.
미국 뉴욕에 본부가 있는 이 단체는 20일 성명을 내고 베트남의 호치민시 경찰이 시 의회 앞에서 한달째 점거 농성을 벌이고 있던 수백명의 농민들의 시위를 가로 막았다며 이같이 주장했습니다.
이 단체는 베트남이 세계 무역기구, WTO에 가입하고, 지난해에는 하노이에서 아시아태평양경제협력체 APEC 회의까지 개최했는데도, 여전히 종교인, 기자 등 정부를 비판하는 이들을 탄압하고 있다고 말했습니다.

The New York-based organization issued a statement today (Friday) saying police in Ho Chi Minh City stopped a protest by hundreds of farmers who had been demonstrating for almost a month outside the city's National Assembly building.
Human Rights Watch says the crackdown shows that Vietnam's government continues to curtail people's rights. It said that since joining the World Trade Organization and hosting the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Hanoi last year, the government has cracked down on its critics, including prominent religious figures and journalists.
Vietnamese officials have not commented on the report.
