이스라엘의 에후드 올메르트 총리는 16일 팔레스타인 마무드 압바스 자치정부 수반에게 이번 주내 이스라엘 감옥에 수감된 팔레스타인군 250명을 석방하겠다고 밝혔습니다.
올메르트 총리의 대변인은 이날 예루살렘에서 압바스 수반은 가진 정상회담에서 올메르트 총리가 이같이 밝혔다며, 수감자들은 금요일쯤 석방될 것이라고 덧붙였습니다.
이에 앞서 이스라엘 당국은 자국을 더 이상 공격하지 않겠다고 약속한 팔레스타인 파타 민병대원 180명에 대한 수배와 추적을 중단한다고 밝혔습니다.
이스라엘은 또 지난 2006년 하마스 무장 내각이 팔레스타인 선거에서 승리한 이후 중단됐던 세수의 이체를 재개키로 했다고 밝혔습니다.
한편, 미국 백악관측은 조지 부시 대통령이 16일 오후 압바스 정부에 대한 미국의 금융, 외교적 지원과 관련해 연설할 계획이라고 밝혔습니다.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has told Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas that Israel will free 250 Palestinian prisoners by the end of the week.
A spokesman for Mr. Olmert says the prisoner release will take place on Friday. He says the prisoners have all been convicted on charges of terrorism, but he says none have "blood on their hands."
The two leaders met in Jerusalem today (Monday) for talks on a package of security compromises in support of Mr. Abbas's moderate West Bank-based government.
In related news, White House officials say President Bush plans to speak later today about U.S. financial and diplomatic support for the Abbas government.
Mr. Abbas set up the government after the militant group Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip in mid-June.
