오는 2008년 미국 대통령 선거를 앞두고 공화당 후보경선에 나섰었던 짐 길모어 전 버지니아 주지사가 후보사퇴를 발표했습니다.
길모어 전 주지사는 14일 자신의 인터넷 웹사이트에 발표한 성명에서 출마를 포기한다고 선언했습니다.
길모어 전 주지사는 후보경선에 뒤늦게 뛰어든데다 이른 예비선거 일정 때문에 더 이상 선거운동을 계속하는 것은 비현실적이라는 판단을 내리게 됐다고 말했습니다.
길모어 전 주지사는 또 대통령 선거에서 경쟁하려면 ‘긍정적인 비젼’ 이상의 것이 필요하다는 것을 깨달았다고 말했습니다.
미국내 대부분의 주들은 내년 1월과 2월에 예비 선거를 실시할 예정입니다.
길모어 전 주지사가 후보를 사퇴함에 따라 공화당 대통령 경선후보는 모두 아홉명으로 줄어들었습니다.
공화당 후보 경선에서는 루디 줄리아니 전 뉴욕 시장과 미트 롬니 전 매사추세츠 주지사가 선두를 달리고 있습니다.

Jim Gilmore, the former governor of the U.S. state of Virginia, has announced his withdrawal from the 2008 U.S. presidential race.
In a statement posted to his website (on Saturday), Gilmore says his late start combined with an early primary schedule made it "impractical to continue".
He added that it takes more than a "positive vision" to compete for president.
Most states are scheduled to hold their primary elections in January and February of next year.
Gilmore's withdrawal leaves nine Republican presidential candidates. The top contenders include former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.
