U.S. homeland security secretary Michael Chertoff says he believes terrorists are planning attacks in the United States during the next few months.
He told the editorial board of the Chicago Tribune newspaper Tuesday that in the past, terrorism activity has increased during the summertime.
Chertoff warned the American people against complacency and said they should be on heightened alert after recent terrorism episodes in Britain. Late last month, two unexploded car bombs were discovered in London and a flaming vehicle was rammed into an airport in Glasgow, Scotland.
Also Tuesday, Chertoff spoke to members of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in Detroit, Michigan. He called on his listeners to respect the civil rights of Muslim Americans, even as U.S. soldiers fight terrorism in the Middle East.
