미국과 러시아는 전략무기감축협정이 종료되는 오는 2009년 이전에 장거리 핵무기 보유량을 가능한 한 최저수준으로 감축하기로 했습니다.
콘돌리자 라이스 미국 국무장관과 세르게이 라브로프 러시아 외무장관은 3일 워싱턴에서 회담을 마치고 발표한 공동성명에서 이같이 밝혔습니다.
이 성명은 두 나라가 전략 공격무기 감축을 국가안보 유지와 동맹에 필요한 최저수준까지 이행하겠다는 의지를 재천명했다고 밝혔습니다.
오는 2009년에 종료되는 전략무기감축협정이 또 다른 협정으로 대체될지 여부는 밝혀지지 않았습니다.
두 나라는 앞으로 평화적인 목적의 핵에너지 활용에서 협력을 확대해 나갈 것이라고 밝혔습니다.

The United States and Russia have announced plans to reduce their nuclear weapons arsenals.
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov issued a joint statement in Washington today (Tuesday). The statement said the two sides intended to carry out strategic offensive reductions to the "lowest possible level consistent with their national security requirements and alliance commitments."
The Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) between Russia and the United States is to elapse in 2009. It is not clear if the treaty will be succeeded by another one.
On other weapons issues, the two sides said will expand their cooperation in the field of using nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
