미국과 유럽연합 (EU)은 개인정보보호법과 테러수사와 관련된 갈등을 해소하기 위한 핵심 조치를 취했습니다.
미국은 테러 방지 수사를 위해 은행 정보를 요구해왔지만 유럽연합의 개인정보 보호법이 이 은행 정보의 대부분을 보호하고 있는 실정입니다.
이러한 정보들은 매일 전세계에서 이뤄지는 수백만의 은행 거래를 담당하는 ‘스위프트 (SWIFT)’ 라고 불리는 국제 금융위원회에 의해 수집됩니다.
미국은 이렇게 수집된 정보들을 보호하고 테러리스트 포착을 위해서만 사용할 것이라고 하고 있습니다.
이 협약이 이행되기 위해서는 유럽연합에 속한 27개 국가로부터 승인을 받아야 합니다.

The European Union and the United States took a key step toward resolving a dispute over privacy rights and terrorism investigations today (Wednesday).
Washington has been demanding banking information to help with anti-terrorism investigations.
But EU privacy regulations protect much of the information.
The information is gathered by an international banking organization called "SWIFT" that handles millions of transactions all over the world every day.
Washington is now promising to protect the information and use it only to hunt down terrorists.
The agreement must still be approved by the EU's 27 member nations.
