베네수엘라 석유장관은 26일 외국 석유회사들이 조업지분의 상당부분을 베네수엘라 정부에 양도하는 협상이 결렬된 후, 코노코필립스사와 엑슨모빌사 등 두 석유회사가 베네수엘라에서 조업을 중단해야 한다고 말했습니다.
두 석유회사들은 그동안 베네수엘라의 우고 차베스 대통령 정부와 지분 보상을 둘러싸고 분쟁을 벌여왔습니다.
차베스 베네수엘라 대통령은 외국 석유회사들에 대해 이날까지 60%의 조업 지분을 베네수엘라 정부에 넘기는데 동의하라고 최후통첩을 보냈습니다.
셰브론과 스타트오일, 토탈, BP등 외국계 석유회사들은 모두 협정에 서명하고 베네수엘라에서 계속 조업을 하기로 했지만, 차베스 정부가 제시한 불리한 조건을 감수해야만 했습니다.
베네수엘라는 이미 통신과 전력부문에서 외국회사들의 지분을 인수한 바 있습니다.

Venezuela's oil minister says two major companies, ConocoPhillips and ExxonMobil, will end their operations in the country after failing to agree to a plan giving a major part of their business to the government.
The companies had been haggling over compensation with the government of President Hugo Chavez.
Mr. Chavez gave foreign oil companies until today (Tuesday) to give the government a 60-percent share of their operations.
Other oil companies, including Chevron, Statoil, Total, and BP all signed agreements to continue working in Venezuela but on tougher terms.
The Chavez government has already taken over foreign companies' assets in the telecommunications and electricity sectors.
