얍 데 후프 쉐퍼 나토 사무총장은 남부 아프가니스탄에서 연합군 공습으로 민간인 사망자가 발생한 데 대해 진상조사를 촉구했습니다.
쉐퍼 사무총장은 그러나 탈레반을 비난하면서 탈레반이 민간인들을 인간방패로 이용하고 있다고 말했습니다. 쉐퍼 총장은 현재 나토가 교전수칙을 평가하고 있다고 밝혔습니다.
한 아프간 경찰은 지난 21일 남부 헬만드 주에서 나토군 공습으로 부녀자와 어린이를 포함해 모두 25명이 사망했다고 말했습니다. 나토군과 경찰서장은 이 공습이 탈레반 저항세력이 나토군을 공격하면서 일어났다고 밝혔습니다.
하미드 카르자이 아프간 대통령은 나토군과 이와 별도의 미군 주도 연합군이 저항세력에 대한 소탕작전 중 민간인들이 피해를 입지 않도록 보다 세심한 주의를 기울여야 할 것이라고 말했습니다.

NATO chief Jaap de Hoop Scheffer is calling for an investigation into the death of civilians in southern Afghanistan following an allied airstrike.
But, the NATO secretary general put the blame on the Taleban, saying it uses civilians as human shields. Scheffer added that NATO is assessing its rules of engagement.
An Afghan police official said a NATO air strike late Thursday killed 25 civilians, including women and children, in southern Helmand province. NATO and the police chief said the airstrike was carried out after allied forces were attacked by Taleban insurgents.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai has said NATO and the separate U.S.-led coalition must do more to stop the killing of civilians during military operations against insurgents.
