유엔은 19일 발표한 보고서에서, 지난 해 전 세계에서 난민이 14% 증가했다고 밝히면서, 이라크와 아프가니스탄 전쟁과 수단 다르푸르의 인도적 위기가 주된 요인이라고 지적했습니다. 유엔은 이라크에서 매일 2천 명의 난민이 발생하고 있으며, 현재 시리아와 요르단에 백 5십만 명의 이라크 난민이 수용돼 있다고 말했습니다.
유엔 당국자들은 요르단과 레바논, 시리아, 그리고 이스라엘 점령지인 요르단강 서안에 있는 4백만 명 이상의 팔레스타인 난민들은 전 세계 난민 수에 포함되지 않았다고 말했습니다.

Pope Benedict has marked World Refugee Day with a plea for governments across the globe to respect the rights of asylum seekers and to protect those fleeing their homelands for their lives.
Speaking today (Wednesday) at the Vatican, the pontiff called the acceptance of refugees an "act of human solidarity" for Christians, and a practical way to show what he called "evangelical love."
A United Nations report Tuesday said the number of refugees worldwide rose by 14 percent in 2006, in large part because of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the humanitarian crisis in the Darfur region of Sudan. It says two thousand people are displaced daily in Iraq, and one-point-five million Iraqi refugees are encamped in Syria and Jordan.
Officials say the figures do not include more than four million Palestinian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and the Israeli-occupied West Bank.
