중국은 세계 최고봉인 에베레스트산 정상까지 2008년 베이징 올림픽 성화 봉송을 용이하게 하기 위해 에베레스트 산 중턱까지 고속도로를 건설한다고 발표했습니다.
중국 관영 신화통신은 19일 새로 건설되는 아스팔트 포장의 고속도로가 에베레스트 산 아래에서부터 해발 5,200미터의 베이스 캠프까지 난 108킬로미터 길이의 기존의 울퉁불퉁한 길을 대체하게 될 것이라고 말했습니다.
이 고속도로 건설은 약 4개월이 걸리고, 건설비는 약 2,000만달러가 소요될 것으로 예상되고 있습니다.
앞으로 에베레스트 산 고속도로가 완공되면 2008년 올림픽 성화 봉송을 용이하게 하는 외에 관광객들과 산악인들에게 주요 통로가 될 것으로 보입니다.

China has announced it is building a highway up the side of Mount Everest to help pave the way for the 2008 Olympic torch relay to the top of the world's tallest mountain.
Xinhua News Agency said Tuesday the new blacktop highway will replace a rough 108-kilometer path from the foot of the mountain to a base camp 52-hundred meters above sea level.
Construction of the road is expected to take about four months and cost nearly 20 million dollars.
In addition to easing the way of the 2008 torch relay, the new highway will become a major route for tourists and mountaineers.
