8개국 정상들은 독일 하일리겐담에서 열린 정상회담의 마지막 실무회의를 마친 뒤 이같이 발표했습니다. 미국은 전체 지원금의 절반인 3백억 달러를 지원하기로 했습니다.
존 쿠푸오 가나 대통령은 아프리카 국가들을 대신해서, 아프리카는 선진 8개국의 기대에 맞춰서 지원금을 사용할 의무가 있다고 말했습니다. 이런 의무에는 부패 척결과 아프리카 국가 스스로의 시스템 개선을 위한 노력 등이 포함됐습니다.
선진 8개국 정상들은 아프리카 대륙에 대한 지원을 2배로 늘이기로 했던 2005년의 결정도 새롭게 확인했습니다. 앙겔라 메르켈 독일 총리는 선진 8개국이 약속을 지킬 것이라고 말했습니다.
토니 블레어 영국총리는 이번 결정이 아프리카와 선진국과의 협력을 보여준다고 말했습니다.

The leaders of the world's eight major industrialized nations have concluded their summit, pledging to spend 60 billion dollars to fight AIDS, malaria and other diseases that plague the African continent.
Their pledge was announced today (Friday) during the final working session of the Group of Eight leaders' summit at a German Baltic Sea resort (Heiligendamm). The U.S. is contributing 30 billion dollars of that pledge.
Speaking on behalf of African nations, Ghana's President John Kufuor said African governments are committed to meeting the expectations set out by the donor nations. This includes fighting corruption and improving government.
The G-8 also renewed promises it made during its 2005 summit to double development aid to the continent. Host German Chancellor Angela Merkel promised that the group will fulfill its obligations.
Britain's Prime Minister Tony Blair said the deal represents a partnership between Africa and the developed world.
