게이츠 장관은 후임으로 마이크 멀런 해군 제독을 추천할 것이라고 말했습니다. 게이츠 장관은 멀런 제독이 미군을 이끌 비전과 전략적 통찰력, 성실성을 갖춘 인물이라고 말했습니다.
한편 유럽을 순방 중인 부시 대통령은, 페이스 합참의장이 오랫동안 국가에 탁월한 기여를 한 점에 대해 감사한다고 말했습니다.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates says he will not recommend Marine Corps General Peter Pace be re-nominated as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff -- the highest-ranking officer in the U.S. military.
Gates told reporters today (Friday) he originally planned to recommend President Bush re-nominate General Pace. But the defense chief said he reluctantly changed his mind, after determining the confirmation hearing would likely be a contentious process.
He says he does not think the nation would be well-served by such a controversy.
Gates says he will instead recommend that Admiral Mike Mullen, chief of U.S. naval operations, be the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He says Mullen has the vision, strategic insight and integrity to lead America's armed forces.
While traveling in Europe today (Friday), President Bush told reporters he appreciated General Pace's long and distinguished service to the country.
