조지 부시 미국 대통령은 오는 9월까지 이라크와 아프가니스탄 군사작전을 위해 1천억 달러를 제공하는 전비법안에 서명하게 돼 기쁘다고 말했습니다.
부시 대통령은 25일 워싱턴 인근의 캠프 데이비드 대통령 별장에서 법안에 서명했습니다. 미 의회는 백악관과의 여러 주일에 걸친 협상 끝에 지난 24일 전비법안을 통과시켰습니다. 민주당은 이라크 주둔 미군철수시한이 포함돼야 한다는 당초의 요구를 법안에서 제외했습니다.
대신 법안에는 이라크 정부가 정치와 보안 개혁에서 진전을 이루지 못할 경우 미국의 경제지원을 철회할 것이라고 위협하는 내용이 포함됐습니다.

President Bush says he is pleased to sign a bill that provides 100 billion dollars to pay for military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan through September.
The president signed the bill Friday at his Camp David retreat outside Washington. The U.S. Congress passed the bill Thursday after several weeks of negotiations with the White House. Congressional Democrats dropped their demands to include a timeline to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq. The bill threatens to withhold U.S. economic aid if Iraq's government fails to meet benchmarks on political and security reforms.
In a statement released Friday, Mr. Bush says the bill allows the troops to operate based on "the judgment of commanders on the ground." He also says the bill "provides a clear roadmap" for the Iraqis to secure the country.
