조지 부시 미국 대통령은 북대서양조약기구인 나토(NATO)의 모든 회원국들이 아프가니스탄 내 전투임무를 분담해야 한다고 말했습니다.
부시 대통령은 21일 텍사스 주 크로포드의 별장에서 얍 데 훕 쉐퍼 나토 사무총장과 만난 후 이 같이 말했습니다. 두 정상은 최근 증가하는 아프가니스탄 폭력 사태에 관해 의견을 나눴습니다.
한편 최근 일부 나토 회원국들은 아프가니스탄 전쟁에 대한 기여도를 조정하기 위한 재검토를 벌이고 있습니다.
데 훕 쉐퍼 사무총장은 테러와의 전쟁에 있어서 아프가니스탄이 여전히 최전선 중 한 곳이라고 말했습니다. 그러면서 최전선에 결함이 생겨서는 안된다는 강력한 입장을 밝혔습니다.
한편 아프가니스탄에서는 최근 발생한 민간인 희생이 미국과 나토에 대한 현지 주민의 지지를 위협할 수 있는 우려가 제기되고 있습니다. 이런 우려는 나토의 26개 회원국 사이에서도 일고 있습니다.
나토 사령관은 민간인 희생이 미국과 동맹국들이 공습에 의해 발생했다는 점을 인정했습니다. 하지만 나토군은 이런 희생을 피하기 위해서 최선을 다하고 있다고 덧붙였습니다.

President Bush has called on all countries involved in the NATO mission in Afghanistan to share the risks of combat.
Mr. Bush made the comment today (Monday) after talks with NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer on the surging violence in Afghanistan.
The two met at Mr. Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas, at a time that some NATO members have been reconsidering the depth of their support for their military mission.
De Hoop Scheffer said Afghanistan is still one of the front lines in the fight against terrorism. He said it is his strong conviction that the front line should not become what he called the "fault line."
Mounting civilian deaths in Afghanistan threaten to erode public support of U.S. and NATO troops and President Hamid Karzai's government. The issue has raised alarm among NATO's 26 member states.
The NATO chief acknowledged that civilian casualties have occurred from U.S. and allied air strikes, but he said that troops are doing everything they can to avoid such casualties.
