Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter has criticized outgoing British Prime Minister Tony Blair's support of the U.S.-led war in Iraq.
In an interview with British radio (BBC) today (Saturday), the former president described Mr. Blair as a weak leader who has been subservient to President George W. Bush. Mr. Carter called the British prime minister "loyal" and "blind."
He said Mr. Blair's support of the war strengthened the White House's justification for what Mr. Carter called the "tragedy in Iraq." Mr. Carter said events could have been different if Mr. Blair had spoken out against the war before the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.
Prime Minister Blair has defended his decision to support the war in Iraq, despite the negative impact it has had on his popularity in Britain. He has announced that he will resign from his post in late June.
