Israeli authorities have charged a Palestinian man with plotting to assassinate Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and other Israeli officials.
Court documents say 25-year-old Masseb Bashir, a resident of a town in the Gaza Strip (Deir el-Balah), was indicted today (Thursday) on suspicion of conspiracy to commit a crime and contact with a foreign agent.
Media reports indicate that Bashir has admitted to gathering intelligence on Mr. Olmert's residence in Jerusalem as part of a plot to kill him. After observing the high level of security there, he allegedly shifted his focus to other targets.
The indictment also states that Bashir underwent combat training provided by the Popular Front militant group.
Israeli's Shin Bet internal security service arrested him in April while the alleged plot was still in an early phase.
