이라크 주둔 미군 사령관, 벤자민 믹슨 장군은 바그다드 인근 일대에서 저항분자들의 공격이 크게 증가해 이 지역의 보안을 확보할 만큼 충분한 병력을 보유하지 못하고 있다고 밝혔습니다.
믹슨 장군은 디얄라주에서 자신이 보유한 수 천 명의 병력은 바그다드 인근지역과 이란쪽 국경지대에 이르는 광범위한 지역에 배치돼 있다면서 미군과 이라크군이 바그다드 시내에서 작전을 강화함에 따라 저항분자들이 디얄라주 등 다른 지역들로 이동해 공격을 벌이고 있다고 말했습니다.
믹슨 장군은 11일, 워싱턴 미 국방부 청사에서 취재중인 기자들과 영상 기자회견을 갖고 이같이 말하면서 최근 몇 주일 동안 미군병력이 증원됐지만 추가병력이 더 필요하다고 말했습니다.
한편, 12일, 바그다드 남쪽에서 저항분자들의 공격으로 미군 다섯 명이 살해되고 세 명이 실종돼 미군 병력이 실종자 수색에 총력을 기울이고 있습니다.

The U.S. military says five American soldiers were killed and three went missing when they came under attack south of Baghdad today (Saturday).
A massive search is under way for the three missing soldiers, following the pre-dawn attack near Mahmoudiya.
Chief U.S. military spokesman Major General William Caldwell says nearby units heard explosions, and a drone plane later observed burning vehicles. He says forces that arrived at the scene of the attack found the five soldiers who were killed.
Caldwell says an Iraqi interpreter was in the group that was attacked. He did not say whether the interpreter was missing or killed.
In other news, the military says coalition forces detained three suspected terrorists and destroyed a vehicle bomb during an operation today in Sadr City.
On Friday, the U.S. commander in northern Iraq said he does not have enough manpower to secure the increasingly violent Diyala province. Major General Benjamin Mixon made the remarks to reporters at the Pentagon by videoconference.
