반기문 유엔사무총장은 국제화학무기 금지협약에 서명하지 않은 모든 나라들은 지체없이 이 협약에 가입해야 한다고 촉구했습니다. 반 총장은 9일 국제화학무기협약 출범 10주년을 맞아 네덜란드 헤이그에 보낸 영상 메시지를 통해 이렇게 강조했습니다. 네덜란드에서는 이날 베아트리체 여왕이 참석한 가운데 화학무기 희생자들을 위한 추모 행사가 열렸습니다.
반기문 사무총장은 이 추모행사가 화학무기 희생자들의 말할 수 없는 참상을 기억하는 뜻깊은 행사라고 말했습니다. 반 총장은 현 세대와 다음 세대들은 그런 아픔을 결코 잊지 않을 것이며 화학무기 제거를 위해 본인은 노력을 배가할 것이라고 덧붙였습니다.
지난 1997년 시작된 국제화학무기 금지협약에는 전세계 182개국이 가입했으나 북한과 이집트, 시리아, 이라크 등은 아직 가입하지 않고 있습니다.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is calling on all countries that have not yet signed the Chemical Weapons Convention to join the treaty without delay.
Mr. Ban delivered a video message to The Hague Wednesday on the 10th anniversary of the Chemical Weapons Convention. Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands dedicated a memorial to the victims of chemical weapons.
Mr. Ban said the memorial remembers the unspeakable horror endured by the victims of such weapons. He said present and future generations will never forget their pain. The secretary-general promised to redouble efforts to rid the world of chemical weapons.
One-hundred-and-82 nations have signed the chemical weapons ban since it came into effect in 1997.
Angola, Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, North Korea, Somalia, and Syria have not joined.
Several other countries, including Israel and Burma, have signed but not ratified the pact.
