The U.S. trade deficit rose sharply in March as the cost of imported oil rose.
Today's (Thursday's) report from the Commerce Department says the gap between what Americans buy abroad and what they sell to customers in foreign nations rose to nearly 64 billion dollars in March.
That is up more than 10 percent from the previous month.
But the politically-sensitive deficit with China shrank as U.S. companies exported more to that nation.
A separate government report (from the Department of Labor) said the number of laid-off workers signing up for unemployment compensation fell by nine-thousand last week (to a total of 297-thousand). Economists say that figure is low for such a large economy and indicates an expanding job market.
