조지 부시 미국 대통령은 영국의 차기 총리예정자인 고든 브라운 재무장관과 협력해 나갈 용의가 있음을 표명했습니다.
부시 대통령은 10일, 토니 블레어 총리가 오는 6월27일에 사임한다고 발표한 가운데 이같이 차기 영국총리와의 협력용의를 표명했습니다.
블레어 총리는 이날 자신의 지역구인 영국 동북부 세지필드에서 노동당 당원들에게 연설하는 가운데 자신의 노동당 당수직 사임결정을 발표하고 이라크 전쟁 참여, 정치자금 스캔들 문제 등 재임기간중 논란이 됐던 자신의 결정을 옹호했습니다.
블레어 총리는 1997년에 야당이던 노동당을 총선거에서 승리로 이끌어 거의 20년에 걸친 보수당의 집권을 종식시키고 최연소 총리로 취임했었습니다.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair says he will hand over power to a new prime minister on June 27th.
Mr. Blair, who has been Britain's leader for 10 years, made the announcement during a speech today (Thursday) to Labor Party supporters in his home constituency (Sedgefield) in northeastern England. He also said he will step down as leader of the Labor Party.
In Washington, President Bush expressed a willingness to work with Mr. Blair's likely successor, Finance Minister Gordon Brown. Mr. Bush also said he will miss Mr. Blair, who was a close ally to the U.S. in the Iraq war - an issue that has hurt Mr. Blair's popularity.
In his speech, Mr. Blair defended some of his controversial decisions.
Mr. Blair became prime minister in 1997 after nearly 20 years of Conservative rule.
