(Eng)

Afghan military officials say more than 60 insurgents have been killed in a joint Afghan and NATO operation in southern Helmand province.

Officials said today (Tuesday) the operation in Gereshk district is ongoing.

They also say troops destroyed at least two vehicles carrying militants in a separate operation in Garmsir district.

Elsewhere in the south today (Tuesday), NATO says militants ambushed a convoy, triggering a gunbattle in which one civilian was killed and others wounded.

One victim said they were caught in the crossfire as they sat in a bakery in Kandahar.

Afghan officials say at least 50 civilians have been killed during operations by U.S.-led troops recently, sparking days of protests by angry villagers.

In separate violence in Kandahar today (Tuesday), unidentified gunmen killed an Afghan man who was on his way to work. He was employed by the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees.

Meanwhile, a U.S. military commander has apologized for the killings of Afghan civilians by U.S. Marines in early March.

Speaking from Afghanistan, Colonel John Nicholson told reporters that he met today (Tuesday) with the families of 19 people who were killed and 50 who were wounded in the violence.

Nicholson read to reporters the official apology he made to the families on behalf of the United States. In it, the commander said he is "deeply ashamed and terribly sorry" that U.S. Marines killed and wounded innocent Afghans. He also said the U.S. government paid about two thousand dollars to the families of each of the deceased.

A U.S. investigation indicated the Marines fired indiscriminately on March fourth, killing and wounding Afghan civilians after their convoy was attacked by a suicide bomber near Jalalabad.
