한국이 지난해 오염된 쇠고기를 반송한 이래 처음으로 미국산 쇠고기가 한국에 도착했습니다.
한국 정부 관계자는 23일 미국산 쇠고기가 시판되기 이전에 검역관들의 검사가 이뤄져야 한다고 말했습니다. 만일 검사를 통과하게 되면, 한국에서는 3년 만에 처음으로 미국산 쇠고기가 시중에서 판매될것입니다.
한국은 지난 2003년 12월 미국에서 광우병이 발생한 직후 미국산 쇠고기 수입을 전면 금지했습니다. 한국은 그 이전까지 세계 3위의 미국산 쇠고기 수입국이었습니다.
한국은 지난해 금수 조치를 해제했지만 , 이후 선적된 수입 쇠고기에서 작은 뼈조각이 발견되자 이를 반송처리했습니다. 검역관들은 이들 뼈조각에서 광우병의 흔적이 포함됐을 수 있다고 주장했습니다.

A shipment of U.S. beef has arrived in South Korea for the first time since Seoul turned away contaminated meat last year.
Authorities said today (Monday) quarantine officials must examine the beef before it can be sold. If the shipment passes inspection, it will be the first U.S. beef sold in South Korea in more than three years.
Seoul had banned the beef following an outbreak of mad cow disease in the United States in December 2003. Before that, South Korea had been the third-largest export market for U.S. beef.
South Korea lifted the ban last year, but then turned away a beef shipment that contained small bone fragments, which quarantine officials say can contain traces of the brain-wasting disease.
