반기문 유엔 사무총장은 수단 다르푸르 사태의 외교적 해결을 위해 유엔안보리에 더 많은 시간을 요청했습니다. 유엔안보리는 다르푸르 사태와 관련해서 수단에 대한 경제 및 군사 제재를 고려하고 있습니다.
반 총장은 22일 스위스 제네바에서 열린 기자회견에서 “다르푸르 사태 해결을 위한 진전이 있는 것으로 믿는다”고 말했습니다.
반 총장은 수단 정부가 최근 유엔평화유지군 3천명의 다르푸르 주둔을 허가 한 점을 언급했습니다. 유엔평화유지군은 현지에 이미 파견되어 있는 7천명 규모의 아프리카동맹군을 지원하기 위한 것입니다.
반 총장은 이것이 최근 5개월간 진지하게 진행해온 협상의 결과라며, 이를 바탕으로 계속 진전을 이루고 싶다고 말했습니다.
미국과 영국은 수단이 다르푸르 지역에서 2만명의 유엔평화유지군 주둔을 허용하지 않으면, 추가 제재를 가하겠다는 입장입니다.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called on the Security Council to give him more time to find a diplomatic solution to the crisis in Darfur before imposing economic and military sanctions on Sudan.
At a news conference in Geneva today (Sunday), Mr. Ban said he believes he has made some progress in resolving the crisis.
He cited the recent commitment by Sudan's government to allow three-thousand U.N. peacekeepers into Darfur. The deployment is designed to strengthen an African Union peacekeeping force of seven-thousand in the region.
The secretary-general said he would like to build on this progress and called it the first positive signal in five months of serious negotiations with the Sudanese government.
The United States and Britain have threatened new sanctions against Sudan unless it allows a larger force of 20-thousand U.N. peackeepers into Darfur.
