아프리카의 나이지리아에서는 21일 폭력 사태와 투표 용지 배부 지연 속에 역사적인 대통령 선거가 실시되고 있습니다.
나이지리아가 영국으로부터 독립한 지난 1960년 이후 민선 정부 간에 평화롭게 권력이 이양되는 것은 이번이 처음입니다.
그러나, 폭력 사태로 억룩진 이번 선거로 나이지리아 전역에서 수 십명이 사망했습니다. 선거 당일인 21일, 폭발물을 적재한 유조차가 선거위원회 본부 건물에 대한 공격을 기도했지만, 공격 목표에 도달하지 못해 공격은 미수에 그쳤습니다.
또한 선거 당국자들이 아티쿠 아부바카르 부통령이 후보로 기재된 새로운 투표 용지를 배부하는데 더 많은 시간이 필요해, 투표가 당초 예정시간보다 2시간 늦게 시작됐습니다. 나이지리아 대법원은 이번 주, 아부바카르 부통령의 후보 자격을 박탈한 선거위원회의 결정을 뒤집는 판결을 내렸습니다.

Nigerians are voting today (Saturday) in historic presidential elections, amid violence and delays in distributing ballots.
The vote marks the first peaceful transfer of civilian power since Nigeria gained independence from Britain in 1960.
The elections have been plagued by violence that has killed dozens of people across Nigeria. An attempted attack on the election commission headquarters in the capital of Abuja early today failed when a gas tanker truck rigged to explode stopped short of its target. The truck did not explode.
Today's vote was delayed by two hours because election officials needed more time to distribute newly-printed ballots to include Vice President Atiku Abubaker. Nigeria's Supreme Court earlier this week overruled a decision by the election commission to disqualify Abubaker from the race.
